HEARD AROUND TOWN

  • ✏️ Waco ISD is in the final stages of its superintendent search, with current Superintendent Susan Kincannon set to retire on September 30, 2024. The district has narrowed the search down to two finalists: Dr. Abelardo Saavedra, a veteran educator and administrator, and Dr. Robin Battershell, who has extensive experience in Texas education. The Waco ISD Board of Trustees is actively seeking public input on the candidates to ensure community involvement in this significant decision. The board is expected to announce its final decision in the coming weeks.

  • 🏋️ Woodway Family Center taking off with new offerings, including pickleball, basketball, and balance chair yoga, to better serve the community. These additions aim to provide physical exercise and social engagement opportunities for residents of all ages. The center's expansion underscores its commitment to promoting health and wellness through diverse and inclusive programs. This move reflects the center's ongoing efforts to meet the evolving needs of its members and enhance community engagement.

Sports

Baylor is currently ranked 12th in the Big 12 for the 2024 football season. After back-to-back losing seasons, including a 3-9 record last year, head coach Dave Aranda has taken on defensive play-calling duties to improve their performance. With the return of key defensive players, including linebacker Matt Jones and All-American Caden Jenkins, Aranda is hopeful for a turnaround. The team's success will heavily depend on the impact of Toledo transfer quarterback Dequan Finn and the strategies of new offensive coordinator Jake Spavital. First game of the season is against Tarleton State on August 31 at McLane Stadium. Buy tickets here.
