Before we jump into the news, I’ve got something fun to share. Yesterday was my birthday, and while I was at the Baylor Club for meetings, the staff totally made my day with a surprise birthday note! 🎉 It got me thinking—what if we could celebrate each other’s birthdays here in the Waco Buzz too?
That’s why I’m excited to introduce a new rewards program for sharing the Waco Buzz with your friends, family, and coworkers—those who need to know the good, true, and great stuff happening around Waco! All you have to do is refer two people to the Waco Buzz, and we’ll give you a special shoutout on your birthday in the newsletter!
But wait, there’s more! The more people you refer, the more rewards you’ll unlock. Stay tuned for even more exciting perks that will be announced soon!
Let’s get to it!
Buzzworthy News
The Future of Floyd Casey Park: Waco’s Next Big Green Space? 🌳
Ever wonder what’s happening with the old Floyd Casey Stadium site? Waco’s Parks & Rec just dropped a video rendering of the future Floyd Casey Park, and let’s just say—it’s a glow-up. Think walking trails, green space, and spots to just hang out and enjoy the city. If you’ve been dreaming of a place to stretch your legs (or let your dog live its best life), this might be your new favorite spot. Check out the vision for yourself here.
Guess BBQ Says Goodbye… Kind Of 🍖
Bad news for BBQ lovers—Guess BBQ announced on Instagram that they’re closing their doors. This local favorite, ranked among Texas’ top 50, has been serving up smoked perfection, and it’s safe to say they’ll be missed. They’ll still be catering events, so if you need a Guerss BBQ fix, you might just have to throw a party. Read their full farewell here.
Across town, tomorrow, The Findery is holding a final garage sale as they close up shop after an amazing 10 year run.
A Valentine’s Date With… Cats? 🐱💘
If your ideal Valentine’s Day date involves cats and coffee, Waco’s got you covered. The Waco Library is hosting a Valentine’s Day Pet Café, where you can sip coffee and hang out with adoptable cats. Whether you’re looking for love or just want to be ignored by a feline in a festive setting, this is the place to be. Who knows? You might just meet your new best friend. Details here.
Reader's Recommendation: Too Good to Go?
This week’s recommendation is a bit different. It comes from Maria, who has a tip for a great new app.
“Is there any way you can find out more or spread the word about the app Too Good To Go? It offers discounts on food from eateries and stores that have a surplus at the close of business, helping you save money and reducing food waste. You can see which places have leftovers from the day and what time they’ll be ready for pick-up — some give you details, but most are “surprise bags” — then reserve what you want, pay through the app, and pick up at the designated time. I saw that Tiff’s Treats and Roni’s Mac Bar uses it now. I frequent there anyway, but I was curious if other businesses would be into this.” – Maria
Great tip, Maria! When you download Too Good to Go, it’s easy enough to use your location to see who participates nearby. It’s super easy for new businesses to sign up.
The primary goal is to reduce food waste so here are some reminders:
It’s first-come, first-served
You don’t get a choice in what you get for the discounted price. That includes no guarantees about allergens or dietary restrictions.
Everything is edible, but it may be at (or just past) its expiration date
Thanks for the rec, Maria!
