BUZZWORTHY NEWS

  • Cameron Park Zoo's Penguin Shores exhibit, featuring 22 African penguins, will open on Thursday, August 8th to highlight conservation efforts and prevent penguin extinction. The penguins, who arrived from the Fort Worth Zoo, have undergone a quarantine period and are acclimating to Waco's climate, which is similar to their native southern Africa. The exhibit aims to breed these endangered birds, whose population has declined by 90% over the past century. The zoo has installed an advanced life support system to regulate water temperature and cleanliness, ensuring the penguins' well-being. Through this exhibit, the zoo hopes to educate visitors about wildlife conservation and the importance of protecting endangered species.

  • Waco's Tennyson Middle School, a $77.6 million project, unveiled its new 184,000 sq. foot building to faculty and staff, emphasizing safety and community engagement. As part of Waco ISD's 2021 bond project, the modern facility features academic neighborhoods and a combined athletics and arts wing to showcase all talents equally. Superintendent Dr. Susan Kincannon highlighted the building's student-focused design, with areas dedicated to extracurricular activities and collaborative learning. The new Tennyson Middle School will welcome students on August 14, while the old site will become the track and football fields by December 2024. If you are wondering, the new Waco High School is projected to open this time next year going into the 2025-2026 school year.

  • Date Night Idea: Lighted Kayaking Tours on the Brazos….starting August 16th when you look at the Brazos River by McLane Stadium you may see numerous kayaks lighting up the night. SPORTS

Baylor Football created a stir this week with their new “We Pay Players” practice shirts highlighting the program's embrace of the Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) era. Head coach Dave Aranda's straightforward statement at the Big 12 Media Day, "We’re paying players," was intended to bolster the team's recruiting success by openly acknowledging the impact of NIL on attracting top talent to Baylor. Aranda's approach aims to create transparency and build trust with recruits and their families. In June, Baylor Athletics received a $10 million dollar gift to further many efforts, NIL being one of them. Let’s hope that it translates to a better season with last years 3-9 record in the rear view mirror.

Meet the Team Fan Fest: August 24, beginning at 2:30 PM

Don’t forget the first game of the season is August 31. It’s a home game against Tarleton State at 6 PM and you can catch it on ESPN+.
